overview
Take your street photography to the next level with this hands-on, day workshop. Kept deliberately small at just six places, this intensive workshop is built to transform you into a street photographer who shoots with creativity, skill and real confidence. You'll benefit from structured time out on the streets combined with one-to-one guidance from your workshop leader, Jon Clements. Jon is a professional photographer who has had his documentary photography published in the Guardian newspaper. He has lectured on the art of street photography.
This is as much a course about vision and artistic instinct as it is about technical know-how. Alongside fresh techniques and new ways of seeing, you'll learn how to craft images with genuine style and personality.
Structure of the day
10:00 – Meeting
Meet at a cafe and go through the day's itinerary – fuel up on coffee!
We'll go through some elements, including:
- Creative approaches to street shooting
- Ethics and consideration
- Techniques
- Gear (cameras, lenses)
- Working with the weather (approaches to light).
10.30 – Morning session
Hit the streets! We'll go out as a group and capture some images of the same scene but from our own perspectives. We'll then go off as individuals for some separate missions which will be revealed on the day.
13:00 – Lunch
We'll meet for a swift lunch and to take a well-earned break.
13:30 – Afternoon session
Back to pounding the pavement for the second session. As the shadows start to lengthen, we'll look at some techniques for using hard light. We'll visit the brutalist Barbican and look at utilising architecture within our compositions. Again, we'll shoot as a group and then have our own, individual missions.
16:00 – Share and review
We'll all head together to one of London's excellent pubs for a drink and a review of the pictures of the day and what we've learnt. Jon will also field any further questions that arise from the day's activities.
17:00 – End of the day
We'll head our separate ways! After the workshop, every participant will receive a pdf booklet of further reading, ideas and inspiration.
The 'best' picture of the day will be featured on Jon's Instagram.
General information
We'll stay in touch throughout the day with a shared WhatsApp group. This is very useful as we can all follow 'live location' meet-ups.

Who is this for?
This course is best suited for beginner and intermediate photographers. It will still be a fun day out for an experienced photographer. A good understanding of how to use your camera would be ideal but true novices also welcome! You'll get plenty of one-to-one attention over the day.
What you'll need
First and foremost – a comfortable pair of shoes! And a brolly. Hopefully, we'll have a sunny day but if it does rain, we'll explore the joys of rain for street photography.
A camera of some kind, with a lens within the focal length of 28-85mm. It really doesn't matter what you bring. I'll be shooting on a Ricoh GRiii (28mm focal length).
