“If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.”
Hello, I'm Jon. I make images.
Photography, for me, is a way to explore and engage with the world. It is also a way to make meaningful connections and to bring people joy. There are a lot of important jobs in the world – certainly more vital ones than photography – but the bringing of joy is important. Art is important.
Certain things 'excite the medium' and that is something I'm always pursuing. A way to activate the frame. I like to try and work at the edge of my knowledge where possible. This is where it's most exciting.
An image is an interpretation, not an absolute depiction of reality, and I find that area of image making fascinating – the objective to abstract scale of which the medium is capable.
The striving for simplification is also an aim. It's what you choose to omit from the frame as much as include. Like with music, the greatest players know when to leave space. And so, with creating images, I find it is a process of reduction, ordering and selecting.
I studied photography at Exeter, spending hours in the darkroom developing film and understanding those analog processes. I also studied graphic design and pursed that path first, later becoming a professional graphic designer.
Photography and graphic design are incredibly closely linked and I always found great satisfaction in the creation of a 'good' image. I later came back to photography through a love of street. I have an ongoing dedication and passion for this work. You can follow my Street Photography London Instagram account.
I’ve had my photography published in the Guardian Newspaper. I’ve had my street photography featured in the Lens Culture annual street photography competition.
